Mr. Narayana Murthy, Founder & Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Ltd. and Mr. Ganesh Natarajan, Chairman NASSCOM & Chairman Zensar Technologies Ltd. met and interacted with the Bhutanese IT & ITES industry at the Ministry of Information & Communications (MoIC) Conference Hall. The one-and-half-hour forum was chaired by H.E. Lyonpo Nandalal Rai, Minister, MoIC. Mr. Murthy and Mr. Natarajan were in Thimphu to attend the NASSCOM (National Association of Software & Services Companies) Executive Council (EC) retreat. NASSCOM, established 20 years ago, is made up of the major software & services companies based in various parts of India.
Mr. Narayana Murthy expressed various reasons for his eagerness to visit Bhutan, “Firstly yours is the happiest country in the world,” he said. “You have an extraordinary King in the entire history of this world; there is no other example of such magnanimity. Bhutan is a green country which has a lot to offer to the rest of the world and it is also a country that offers considerable opportunities in our BPO sector.”
Mr. Murthy went on to share Infosys’s journey since it was established in 1981 by 6 other founders with a startup budget of US$250 which has now grown into a US$4.7-4.8 billion company and is 2nd after Microsoft.
The private sector participants, from the Bhutanese IT/ITES industry, subsequently interacted with Mr. Murthy & Mr. Natarajan, seeking advices about the global IT/ITES industry and what startup companies and entrepreneurs in Bhutan should be looking into.
While sharing his numerous accumulated wisdom and experience with the local audience, Mr. Murthy pointed out some of the challenges which Bhutan would need to work on so as to attract serious investors into Bhutan, e.g. air connectivity to major cities in India, telecom connectivity, and hassle-free cross-border movement of people. He, however, added that a major plus point for Bhutan is its large English speaking population waiting to be tapped by the industry.
