As part of this initiative, Airtel has inked an MoU with the Royal Government of Bhutan to extend fibre connectivity to the Himalayan Kingdom. Gracing the occasion, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, Minister for Economic Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan, said: “… the Royal Government of Bhutan is working on a new Economic Policy. With the vision to create a ‘vibrant, self reliant and sustainable knowledge-based economy by 2023 in harmony with the principles of GNH’, this policy puts Information & Communication Technology (ICT) at the nerve centre of our economic development. Needless for me to mention, one of the first preconditions if this is to happen, is the availability of reliable and high bandwidth connectivity.” “The Royal Government of Bhutan has identified ICT as a priority sector for creating an inclusive Information Society, through appropriately deploying ICT to provide e-Gov services to citizens and businesses, and promoting the growth of the IT/ITES industry in Bhutan. We are privileged to have Bharti Airtel, one of the largest telecom operators in the world as our partners in this initiative.” said Lyonpo Nandalal Rai, Minister for Information & Communications, Royal Government of Bhutan. The initiative will enable enterprises in Bhutan, to reach out to the world by accessing Bharti Airtel’s cable assets, through its international cable landing stations in Chennai and Mumbai. The terrestrial fiber optic link to Bhutan will be ring protected to ensure high uptime, and hence is set to boost IT & telecommunication infrastructure in Bhutan through achieving the much needed diversity and redundancy in its international telecom connectivity. “We are deeply honored to have the opportunity to partner with the Royal Government of Bhutan to help build a world class ICT infrastructure in Bhutan. At Bharti, we have always believed in undertaking business projects that have a positive impact on the society at large. The launch of Bhutan Fiber Connect is reiteration of Bharti Airtel’s commitment to building a truly global network." said Manoj Kohli, CEO & Joint MD, Bharti Airtel. Bhutan is being positioned as a destination of choice for global organizations to set up back office and Data Centre operations, considering the talent pool of English speaking graduates and Government support.
