There is a dynamic change in the mode of traditional business transaction due to fast proliferation of information and communication technologies.

Bhutan has twenty administrative units called dzongkhags or districts, each headed by a dzongda or a district administrator. The dzongkhag administration is composed of the ministry and department line offices.

The Internet was introduced into Bhutan in 1999 coinciding with the Silver Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty’s 25 years of glorious reign in the country, truly ushering Bhutan into the Information Age. With it Bhutan joined the multitude of nations aspiring to harness the power of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to achieve further progress.

E-Governance Project is based on MoU between DIT and NICSI(National Informatics Centre Service Incorporated).

Localization of E-Governance has two part i.e E-Platform and Forestry and Dzongkhag-GeogE-Services

The objective of the project is to increase productive employment in Bhutan through promotion of enterprise development in the Information and Technology (IT)/ IT Enabled Services sector, enhanced IT skills, and improved access to finance.

PAN Localization: A regional initiative to develop local language computing capacity in Asia in partnership with National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences(NUCES),Pakistan.

Coronation and Centenary Celebration Website is undertaken by the DIT,in commemorating 100 years of monarchy and coronation of His Majesty the fifth king.

The Bhutan Digital Library will assist in the co-ordination of these efforts, and enable Bhutanese individuals and communities it represent thier traditions and perspective domestically and internationally.

The Thimphu WAN (TWAN) project, including the rectification works have been completed as of August 2008. The rectification phase of the project laid fiber optic connections to some more organizations which were not featured in the first phased. Today, about seventy five organizations have been operationally joined to the network.
