The present Dzongkha localization project enables full Dzongkha computing support in Linux operating system. The main deliverable for this project will be Dzongkha Linux, an operating system with the following key support:
Office application (Open Office 2.0) with Dzongkha computing capability and in Dzongkha interfaces. Desktop completely in Dzongkha language (gnome). Web browser with Dzongkha support for browsing Dzongkha website and in Dzongkha interface (Mozilla). Support for sending e-mails in Dzongkha language. A customized Linux operating system (Dzongkha Linux)..etc.
This project is being funded by IDRC till April, 2007.
The key issues concerning are:
1) Who will be using the Dzongkha Linux.
In the present situation majority of people use Microsoft products and are
comfortable using the system in English user interface.
Short Term Solution:
(a) provide training which will help to a small extent only
(b)identify key user group most likely to use Dzongkha linux such as Monk body, ILCS,Sherubtse college
offering Dzongkha honours etc.
Long term goal:
(a)target the future generation
(b) introduce Dzongkha Linux to educational institutes especially primary and secondary schools, and
(c)finally awareness campaign
2) What next after April 2007. Are we done with the Dzongkha Linux? April 2007 is not the end of Dzongkha Linux. It symbolizes the begining of long commitment towards open source software development in Bhutan. Every 6 months open source community release new softwares based according to the needs of the users as well as improvement to the old version. e.g. add extra feature and support like video conferencing as part of Desktop, Office applications released with added features, support for blue tooth etc. In short open source community keeps on working by incorporating new features in accordance with the needs of users and also keeping in track with the emerging technology. Bhutan is ready for affiliation with the open source products as we now have technical human resources who can take up open source product development. A million dollar question is "are we willing to commit and invest resources in the years to come"? :)
